Art Scene: Muqeem- Series 1

This is the exhibition I got invited to as a Blogger which then sparked the idea of maybe adding Art to my blog posts.

هذا هو المعرض اللي انعزمت عليه كبلوقر ومنها جتني فكرة اني أضيف الفن كجزء من المدونة حقتي.

The Artist 

Muqeem, Series 1 is the first solo exhibition for artist Ehab Mamdouh, a film and video maker professionally, Egyptian by birth, but has lived most of his life in Saudi Arabia. The artist uses the human figure and examines the five gestures of Islamic prayer, creating an astonishing range of different images. This exhibition was held at AlaānArt Space in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

"مقيم، المجموعة الأولى" أوّل معرض للفنّان إيهاب ممدوح، المتخصص في مجال الأفلام والفيديو، ولد في مصر لكنه أمضى معظم حياته في المملكة العربية السعودية. يجمع ممدوح ببراعة فنية بين وضعيات الصلاة الخمس في أنماط متكررة من الأشكال الهندسية المستوحاة من الفن الإسلامي الكلاسيكي لتصوير إحدى أهم الشعائر في الإسلام. المعرض كان في مساحة الآن الفنية.

"Muqeem", the title of the exhibition, is used by the artist to suggest not the mere physical performance of prayer, but rather to express the idea of entering into prayer or "settling" into the spiritual place of being before Allah.

اختار الفنان كلمة "مقيم" عنواناً لأحدث معرض لمساحة الآن الفنية، ليس فقط للتعبير عن تأدية الصلاة بالمعنى الجسدي، إنما أيضاً للتعبير عن فكرة الصلاة أو "الإقامة" في المكان الروحي أمام الله.

The graphic impact of the work, which the artist worked on during a three-year period, is heightened by the use of a stark predominantly black and white palette, while a select few works “pop” with color -a pomegranate red or turquoise backdrop creates a sense that the human figures are emerging from the picture plane.

إنّ الاستعمال الواضح للوحة ألوان يطغى عليها الأبيض والأسود يعزّز التأثير التصويري لهذا العمل الفني الذي استغرق إنجازه ثلاث سنوات، في حين "تزهو" أعمال مختارة قليلة بألوان مثل الأحمر الداكن أو خلفية فيروزية تعطي انطباعاً بأنّ الأشكال البشرية تنبثق من الصورة.

"The prayer figures or ‘prayer vectors’ in Muqeem, Series I represent a surprising departure in the world of Contemporary Islamic Art, which more often than not employs contemporary forms of calligraphy as the artistic focus. Mamadouh’s work is a notable exception. The artist’s use of the human figure to express an aspect of the Islamic faith goes far beyond what we have been seeing", comments Alaān ’s owners Neama and Mohammed A. Alsudairi, who immediately recognized the importance of Mamdouh’s work. 

According to exhibition curator, Mary Teeling, "Mamdouh’s powerful and contemporary portrayal of the human figure in the five gestures of prayer in Islam have a clarity of vision and a pristine graphic beauty that engages the viewer no matter what one’s belief. Muslim and non-Muslim, and those with no faith background at all will appreciate this work".

  

" تشكّل شخصيات المصلّين أو "نواقل الصلاة" في المجموعة الأولى من مقيم انحرافاً مفاجئاً في عالم الفن الإسلامي المعاصر، الذي غالباً ما يستعين بالأشكال المعاصرة لفنّ الخط لتكون محطّ تركيزه الفني. وأعمال ممدوح هي استثناء بارز عن هذه القاعدة. فاستعمال الفنان للأشكال البشرية للتعبير عن جانب من الإيمان الإسلامي يتخطّى ما نراه"، على حدّ تعبير نعمة السديري ومحمد السديري، مؤسِّسَي مساحة الآن الفنية، اللذين أدركا فوراً مدى أهمية عمل ممدوح.
 

وفقاً لماري تيلينغ، القيّمة على المعرض،" فإنّ تصوير ممدوح للشكل البشري بطريقة مؤثرة وعصرية في وضعيات الصلاة الخمس في الإسلام يتّسم بوضوح في الرؤية وتصوير بياني جميل في نقاوته يشدّان المُشاهد مهما كانت عقائده. لا شكّ في أنّ المسلمين وغير المسلمين، وغير الملمّين بالدين، سيقدّرون هذا العمل على حد سواء".

  I have to thank Alaān Artspace's team for providing me with all the above details and the images( those which are not tagged) and for including me in the guest list. I also enjoyed their personalized tour that was provided by Jou Pabalate who has me spoiled now. I'm not sure I'll be enjoying other art exhibition as much as I did Muqeem's from there on onwards.

كل الشكر لفريق عمل مساحة الآن الفنية على كل هذي المعلومات ،الصور وعلى الدعوة لحضور معرض مقيم. مرة انبسطت بالجولة الخاصة اللي سوها لنا في المعرض مع جو بَبلات اللي خربتنا، ما أظن اني راح انبسط في المعارض الجاية بعد ما دلعونا في معرض مقيم!
