Saudi Design Week- Day 3

 Deborah brought to Saudi design Week her  award-winning documentary "Versailles ’73: American Runway Revolution" which was showing in Harvey Nichols Riyadh throughout the week. 

Sadly due to my day job I wasn't able to go see the screening. But thank god Deborah was scheduled to talk to us about it during the forum. So I made sure to attend that part.

Let me share the trailer 1st;

ديبورا جابت لاسبوع التصميم السعودي فيلمها الوثائقي الحائز على جائزة "فَارسآي ٧٣:ثورة الرَن واي الأمريكية"، اللي كان ينعرض في هارفِي نِيكلز الرياض طول فترة الافنت.

للاسف، بسبب دوامي ما قدرت أشوف الفيلم. بس الحمد لله انها كانت من ضمن المتحدثين في المنتدى، فحضرت لها.

هذا عرض قصير للفيلم:

At the end of her talk about the movie, she shared with us the moral of the story; "Sometimes you can start with an idea or a project, work on it with a group of people, face hardships and maybe get into fights along the way, but it could be the thing that ends up changing the world."

Though the competing American designers were not in their best elements, they didn't know anybody in Paris, the fierce competition, and things falling apart at times, they ended up changing the face of fashion shows from that day onwards.

She made me realize that I have a long way to go when it come to fashion history. She made me want to know the story behind what we have nowadays. For Example; I learned that the second world war is the reason New York Fashion Week exists now.

في أخر كلامها عن الفيلم، قالت لنا ايش كان القصد من القصة: " أوقات راح تبدون بفكرة أو مشروع، تشتغلون فيه مع مجموعة من الناس،تواجهكم صعوبات ومشاكل في الطريق، ويطلع في الأخير هذا هو الشي اللي راح يغير في العالم".

 مع ان المصممين الامريكان المشاركين في المسابقة ما كانت الامور في صالحهم، ولا كانوا يعرفون احد في باريس، المنافسة القوية، وكمية الاشياء اللي كانت تخرب عليهم، الا انهم هُم اللي ساهموا في تغيير شكل عروض الأزياء من ذاك اليوم. 

خلتني استوعب انه وراي شغل كثير واني ما أعرف شي في تاريخ الفاشن!!وحببتني في اني اعرف القصة وراء الاشياء اللي عندنا هالايام. مثلاً: تعلمت انه الحرب العالمية الثانية هي السبب اللي صار بعدها أسبوع نيويورك للفاشن موجود الآن.

 I have to say he wore all the saudi attire as well as any Saudi would, curtsey of Toby & Lomar styled by Hala ALHarithy. He even mixed a bisht by Lomar with his own white shirt and black pants.

Cameron gave us a bit about his life ,how he wanted to be a singer but because of his love of collecting vintage pieces he ended up becoming a retailer.He opened his store Decades, which is a place to showcase vintage pieces but in a modern way.

Going through his book , he showed us various old painting and images that we can see similar items in today's fashion. 

He is a smart speaker and has a wonderful bubbly personality. He knew that there were fashion students and designers among the audience so during his talk he would point out things to them like;

"Young designers should create a lifestyle when creating a collection not just a product."
" The secret of a good designer and a good stylist is the ability to edit."

الحق ينقال، كَامرُون لَبَق عليه اللبس السعودي، اللي كان من تقديم توبي و لومار وتلبيق الستاليست هالة الحارثي. حتى لما لبس بِشت من لومار مع قميص أبيض وبنطلون أسود طلع عليه حلو.

حكى كامرون شوي عن حياته، وكيف كان يبي يصير مغني بس من كثر ما يحب يجمع قطع فِنتج، قرر يصير صاحب محل وسماه ديكيِّدز. فكرة المحل انه يعرض القطع الفِنتج بشكل عصري.

بدأ يتكلم عن كتابه، وعرض لنا صور ولوح فنية قديمة ممكن جدا نشوف الملابس اللي فيهم في وقتنا الحالي.

كامرون متحدث ذكي ،شخصيته حلوة وونيس. عرف ان الحضور فيهم طلبة تصميم أزياء ومصممين، فلما كان يتكلم كان يعمل حسابهم ويلفت نظرهم لاشياء مثل:

 
"مصممين الأزياء الشباب لازم يخترعون أسلوب حياة لما يفكرون بتصميم مجموعة،مو بس يركزون على المنتج لحاله."

"السر وراء المصمم الناجح والستايلست الناجح هو قدرتهم على التعديل."

 This was one of the images he shared and he said that:" the back of this dress was more important than the front. The photographer took a picture of it from the back only! It's one thing to walk into a room and another when you walk out"
هذي واحدة من الصور اللي عرضها لنا وقال:" ظهر هذا الفستان كان أهم من واجهته. بدليل انه المصور بس صور الظهر! دخلتكم على أي غرفة شي، ولا جييتم تطلعون منها شي ثاني."

He also mentioned that; " when I look at old pieces I want to see them in a modern way, but when I look at future designs I want to see what is coming. I want to see the future."

I especially liked when he was talking about restrictions. He has a positive take on the matter. His view is that restrictions actually make you more creative. That for example; he likes styling curvy women rather than the stick figures, because for him, if he can make that curvy woman's beautiful body look just as great in clothes then he has done his job. He also point out that he sees that in the creativity Saudi Designers have shown in working with abayas. That the fact that there are strict guidelines to follow shows the creative touch that went into these abayas to make them different in spit of the rules. Restrictions bring out the best in us.

After his session ended, they gave us a break to meet in the hall, for those interested in buying his book and have it signed by him.
Of course I have his signature on my copy.

وكمان وضح:" لما أناظر القطع القديمة أبغى أشوفها بطريقة عصرية. بس لما أناظر التصاميم الجديدة أبغى أشوف اللي جاي. أبغى أشوف المستقبل."

عجبني بالذات لما تكلم عن القيود. وكيف يشوف هذي القيود بشكل ايجابي. وجهة نظره كانت ان القيود سبب في ان الواحد يكون متفنن أكثر. جاب مثال: كيف انه يحب يلبس المرأة المليانة اكثر من النحاف. لان بالنسبة له اذا عرف يطلع الواحدة اللي جسمها مليان بلبس حلو يناسب جسمها فهو يكون نجح بالمهمة. وشاف هذا في تفنن المصممين السعودين لما يناظر العبايات. مع انه لازم تكون ماشية مع التوجيهات معينة بس باين الإبداع اللي في العبايات بالرغم من هذي القواعد. وهذا يبين ان القيود ممكن تِطلِّع أحسن شي عند الشخص.

 وبعد ما خلصنا الأسئلة صار فيه استراحة، واتجمعنا برا القاعة عشان اللي يبغى  يشتري كتابه ويوقع كامرُون عليه.
