Saudi Design Week - Day 1

This was one very busy week that passed. But good kind of busy.

الاسبوع اللي فات كان مرة زحمة بس حلو.

We have gotten used to people traveling outside Saudi for art talks and art events. But this time I have experienced it in my hometown. and boy was it and exciting week. Thanks to Oasis Magazine we now have Saudi Design Week which will be an annual event.

There were events happening throughout the city in different locations, which I was annoyed by, because of the limited time we had to be able to attend them all. But then again, that was the normal thing with all art fairs around the world!! ( a point that was clarified to me by Sami ALTokhais, one of the photographers participating in the Saudi Design Week through Phone Art Saudi in the Globe, ALFaisaliah Hotel) And I realised that I'm used to taking time off to attend these fairs. That this must be how people in Dubai might be feeling too when events and fairs are hosted in their hometown. 

Oh well!!! Needless to say I didn't make it to half of the other locations, like Lam Art Gallery & Naila Art Gallery.

Now since I mainly attended the Design Forum, that is what I will be talking about here. There were a great number of exceptional speakers but I will not go through all of them, just the ones that have stuck with me.

 تعودنا اننا اذا كنا نبي نحضر معارض ومناقشات فنيه فإن الموضوع يكون فيها سفرة برا السعودية. بس السنة هذي كانت التجربة عندنا وفي الرياض كمان. وكل هذا يرجع لمجلة أويسيس اللي رتبوا لأسبوع السعودي للتصميم اللي راح يصير بشكل سنوي.

كان في افنتات كثيرة قاعدة تصير في أماكن مختلفة، وهذا الشي قهرني، لأن ما كان يمدينا عليهم كلهم!! بس الصدق انه هذا اللي يصير في كل المعارض الفنية في العالم. ( طبعا هذي النقطة ذكرني فيها سامي الطخيس أحد المصورين الفوتوغرافيين من "فُون آرت سعودي Phone Art Saudi" اللي مشاركيين في الأسبوع السعودي للتصميم وعارضين في الغلوب في فندق الفيصلية. وصدق استوعبت انه بالعادة نكون ماخذين اجازة ورايحين نحضر الافنت. أجل هذا احساس الناس الي ساكنة في دبي مع كل المعارض والافنتات اللي يسوٌنها عندهم. 

المهم، ما يحتاج اقول لكم انه ما أمداني الَّحق على الأماكن الثانية مثل لام آرت غاليري ونايلا غاليري.

وبما اني كنت بس حاضرة منتدى التصميم، هذا هو اللي راح اتكلم عنه. كان فيه مجموعة كبيرة من المتحدثين المميزين بس ما راح ادخل في التفاصيل، بس راح اقول لكم عن اكثر الاشياء اللي مسَّكت معاي.

Princess Reema talked about how Fashion in Saudi is no longer a hobby, but a business worth investing in. 

How she would like to see Saudi Designers being referred to as "A Designer" period, just as the international well-known fashion designers are known for being "A Designer".

She also talked about how there are great fashion schools in Riyadh like ASI and Raffles, where these designers are getting their fashion education, and how retail stores like Harvey Nichols Riyadh have taken the responsibility to help train these students.  

There was the point that the fashion industry in Saudi should start addressing the problems that are facing these designers and leading to the high price tag on their pieces, like for example the lack of production lines. This puts retailers in the tight spot of whether to go for the international designer piece or the young emerging local designer piece who is priced the same?!

Maybe someday we will start having factories in Saudi.

 تكلمت الأميرة ريما عن كيف ان الفاشن في السعودية الآن ما عاد هواية، بالعكس صار تجارة المفروض يتم الاستثمار فيها.

وذكرت كيف انها تتمنى تشوف  المصممين السعوديين يصنفون كمصممين فقط، مثل كل المصممين العالميين اللي معروفيين بانهم مصممين. 

 وتكلمت كمان عن انه في الآن مدارس فاشن ممتازة مثل معهد المهارات والفنون ومعهد رافلز اللي يقدمون التعليم للمصممين وانه المحلات التجارية مثل هارفي نَيكلز كمان قاعدين يساعدونهم من ناحية التدريب.

 بس صناعة الأزياء في السعودية لازم تتطور وتبدا بايجاد حلوللمشاكل اللي يواجهونها المصممين المحليين الي تأدي الى ارتفاع اسعار القطع اللي ينتجونها. ومن اكبر اسباب هذا الموضوع هو عدم وجود مصانع محلية. ناتجة هذا الشي  هو انه المحلات التجارية تنحط في موقف صعب: هل يختارون قطعة من مصمم عالمي معروف او ياخذون من المصممين المحليين الجدد واثنينهم بنفس السعر؟

عسى يجي اليوم اللي نلاقي فيه مصانع للألبسة في السعودية.

Talked a little about Design Days Dubai. He also showed us a video that reminded me why I like attending art fairs. Art is fascinating.They make you ask; How on earth did they do that?!!

You should attend it this March.
